Shipping Container Grades

New (One Trip) Shipping Containers:
In North America, “new” shipping containers are actually used once, hence the term “new (one trip).” About 95% of these containers are made in China, where they are loaded with goods and shipped via cargo ship to the U.S. The high demand for products being exported from China creates a need for empty containers, which are essentially used as packaging. The shipping cost is largely covered by the buyers of the goods being imported.

After traveling approximately 8,000 miles, these containers are still in excellent condition, though minor marks, scratches, or dents may appear due to the loading and transport process. If aesthetics and durability are important to you, a new one-trip container is the best choice.

Our new one-trip containers come with a 10-year factory warranty.

Cargo Worthy (CWO) Shipping Containers:
If you’re planning to ship your container internationally, you’ll need a Cargo Worthy (CWO) grade container, also known as “sea-worthy.” These used containers are typically 8-15 years old and are structurally sound.

Shipping lines require that containers be inspected and certified by a qualified surveyor before being loaded for export. Blue Sky Depot can arrange an inspection for $149. We guarantee that any cargo-worthy grade or new one-trip container purchased from us will pass the surveyor’s inspection.

Wind and Water Tight (WWT) Shipping Containers:
Also referred to as “A grade,” these containers are ideal for budget-conscious buyers looking for storage solutions. WWT containers are typically 12-15 years old and have been retired from use by shipping lines and leasing companies. They are no longer used for international transport but are suitable for home storage, local transport, or construction.

These containers have visible signs of wear, such as dents, scratches, and surface rust. The floors are often worn, and there may be repaired sections in the walls. However, they are inspected to ensure they are wind and water tight, meaning they have no holes and the doors seal properly to keep out water. WWT containers are structurally sound and have passed an inspection for safety. While they no longer meet certification standards for cargo transport, they are perfect for local use.

WWT containers make up about 60% of our sales and may require some initial maintenance.

We Don’t Sell:
We do not sell B grade or AS-IS containers. These containers are typically damaged and sold based on the estimated repair costs. Be cautious when buying refurbished containers from other resellers, as they may just be old, rusted containers with a fresh coat of paint and no real structural improvements.
