Shipping Container Sizes & Availability

The most common shipping container sizes available in North America are 20-foot and 40-foot units, with the measurement referring to the length. All containers shipped by cargo must have a fixed width of 8 feet, except for 53-foot containers, which adhere to rail standards and are 8 feet 6 inches wide.

Coastal depots, such as those in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, New York, and Chicago, generally have a wide range of container grades, sizes, and configurations in stock. Inland depots, like those in Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City, typically carry only the most common sizes and grades.

Standard vs. High Cube:

  • Standard containers are 8 feet 6 inches tall.
  • High Cube containers are 9 feet 6 inches tall. Blue Sky Depot stocks both sizes. The most popular choice for 40-foot containers is the High Cube (HC) version. Customers typically opt for standard (STD) containers only if there are height restrictions at the delivery site.
